Apollo IX Astronau Russell Schweickart (on right)
standing in his avatar at the 30th anniversary Apollo XI reenactment
On July 20th 1999, a very special event occured in a small corner of Avatar Cyberspace, the reenactment of the Apollo XI and IX lunar mission on their 30th Anniversaries. One hundred people enter a special virtual world called MOON build by the CERHAS project lead by Benjamin Britton at the University of Cincinnatti. MOON is accessible in the Active Worlds universe and can be visited today. MOON includes a full museum to the past decades of manned space travel. Bruce Damer and DigitalSpace Corporation were instrumental in recruiting Apollo IX Astranaut Russell Schweickart to enter the world on the date and time of the Apollo landing 30th anniversary and tour guests through landing sites and a recreation of his mission on Apollo IX. These pages document a historic event where "outer space met cyber space". You can also read the complete chat log of the event. MOON is being made as part of a Web - DVD art project by Benjamin Britton at The University of Cincinnati. for additional information, see the CERHAS MOON Project pages and our Apollo IX with Rusty Schweickart and Apollo XI Rehearsals pages. To visit MOON on the Internet, download and install Active Worlds and teleport to the world MOON. Images by DigiGardener (Bruce Damer) and Daphne.
