DigitalSpace, working together with partners at NASA and its prime contractors is developing SimEVA, an advanced EVA/IVA design simulator and training environment that can be used collaboratively before and during flight for astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. We are developing this 3D environment to enhance the design and planning of procedures, to lower training times and costs and to enhance safety for current and future missions. The past few years has seen an expansion in research into human habitation including closed and open life support systems, analogue habitats for human work-practice studies and overall habitat design . Habitats for human exploration and permanent presence on the Moon and Mars will require vastly expanded habitat research and design validation efforts. Modern Geographical Information Systems permit real-time 3D virtual globes to be made of the moon and planets. These globes feature 3D terrain and texture data captured from orbiting spacecraft. Working with several partners DigitalSpace is testing and promoting an approach to solar system exploration we call “SimPlanet”. Read our white paper here.

From the earliest work on 3D virtual environments for modeling, simulation and visualization, the field has been characterized by the predominance of hand-built content. In the past few years, databases have become a major tool in the generation and operation of 3D virtual environments. DigitalSpace's approach connects open source and standard databases with open 3D scenegraphs and components to create a truly new platform for modeling, simulation and training applications in several industries.
