Interview with XelaG On his Life with Bots

Immigration Officer: Welcome to Avatars 2000: CyberSpace for a New Millennium Event starts Sunday Oct 15 beginning at 5pm VRT till 11pm VRT This world is currently the main entrance to Activeworlds
Interviewer: DigiGardener Bruce Damer pictured above
Participants: XelaG (far astronaut, facing us) grande botmeiser, [Delph] Uber bot (leftmost little grey guy), [VBird] and [Pal] (standing to his left) bot followers of [Delph] and ClubKitten, a newbie citizen joining us out of pure chance.
Location of interview: Hub of the Avatars2000 Space Station, Active Worlds. Some items of note outlined in blue.
XelaG: delph join me
[Delph]: Joining you, XelaG
digigardener: gettign shots
digigardener: so what is the story behing vbird and pal?
digigardener: alex can you walk around and have them follow?
XelaG: Well Delph and VBird are the direct descendants of XL and Blip
digigardener: what do they do, what are their jobs?
digigardener: and what is the origin of their names?
XelaG: well Delph is really the prototype, I test all the new features with him
XelaG: Delph = Delphi pascal
XelaG: VBird + Visual Basic + the fact Blip was always XL's bird friend
XelaG: VBird = ...
XelaG: I moved over from HamFon's bots to making my own, and from VB to Delphi... both were good steps
XelaG: :)
digigardener: ahh i see
digigardener: what do you think they do for your life inworld?
XelaG: Pal was for the Help files, his name appears there
digigardener: doing a bit of an interview here
XelaG: heheh
digigardener: hey guys you look like huey duey and louey!
XelaG: These are relly just companions, they complement the browser, and go everywhere with me
XelaG: If I need jobs done, its usually Delph who does them
XelaG: he has many more features than the browser
XelaG: if i have to attend a meeting, he goes and logs
digigardener: and what kind of thing can he build?
XelaG: I don't use the browser for that... If i have to give a talk, I ask Delph to do it
digigardener: ahh are you shy Alex?
XelaG: oh all sorts, it has to be planned carefully beforehand. He can work with 'blueprints'
XelaG: blueprints... and scripts
XelaG: Well dogi, you know the copy paste technique for giving lectures etc in AW
XelaG: sorry, digi
XelaG: Delph has a better technique, I can copy paste whole chunks of speeches into him
XelaG: and he delivers them at a normal pace
XelaG: so it saves the line by line thing
digigardener: ahh i see
digigardener: thats how you did the cy awards
XelaG: which can be tiring and confusing to do
digigardener: how much of a learning capacity do they all have?
XelaG: no, the cy awards was fully automated
XelaG describes receiving a great honor for a citizen, a Cy Award, back in 2000. Delph received the award and made the speech
XelaG: Delph entered flying as a bird thru the roof, flew around and landed on the stage
XelaG: and changed to humanoid
XelaG: I presented him and he did the speech...

digigardener: so do you feel as though there is a bit of you online even when you are not there, if delph and co are holding the fort?

XelaG: ok, thats how he delivers speeches
XelaG: Yes, sort of... What I mostly feel is that there is a bit of me missing when they are not there :)
digigardener: interesting
digigardener: can they represent you to others, or other bots, if you are not around?
XelaG: I avoid worlds where my bots cant come in...
digigardener: what prohibits your bots entry
XelaG: Sure, in a way. They are logging, at least Delph is... and they record messages of course by doing so
XelaG: Oh you know bots can be banned or allowed. Most worlds do not allow bots
digigardener: that is a shame, why not?
XelaG: It was the same in Isaac Asimov's stories btw
digigardener: ahh what did Asimov say?

XelaG: Afraid they can do more than humans
ClubKitten: robots?

XelaG: Well, in his robot stories, especially books before and about the Foundation, bots are banned from almost everywhere... the more they look like humans, the more threatening they become
digigardener: CK can you introduce yourself?

Delph recites Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics
[Delph]: The Three Laws of Robotics are:
[Delph]: 1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
[Delph]: 2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
[Delph]: 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

digigardener: CK choose the Avatar menu at the top
digigardener: and pick another av
digigardener: you can see yourself from outside by pressing the Eye icon at the top of the screen
XelaG: Only the first few avs are working, the others have been removed
digigardener: for some reason

digigardener: there are not too many people in this pioneering form of cyberspace
digigardener: but those of us here are dedicated
digigardener: we think that this will be the way we all interact online in the future
ClubKitten: there is something so amazing about creating an "alternative" world
digigardener: yup, i wrote a book about it called Avatars
ClubKitten: this is definately chatting on another level
ClubKitten: I was never into chat but this seems more artistic
digigardener: yup and some worlds have live voice
digigardener: so how did you find about this?
ClubKitten: i was reading about that in help
ClubKitten: i was bored so i thought id check it out cause it said free
ClubKitten: anything 3d sounded interesting
ClubKitten: create buildings and people-gestures? WOW
ClubKitten: sorry im gushing!
digigardener: no probs
digigardener: i got this excited at the beginning too

Daphne: you can right click avatars and a window drops down.. Several options there
ClubKitten: oh easy!

Daphne: or to add someone you are not near.. right click in the white area of the Buddy tab and select Add New Contact
