January 12 Was the 12th annual Digital Be-In held in San Francisco, see our photo album here.
January 23-26 Was the 10th annual Medicine Meets VR 2002 at the Newport Beach Marriott, California, the foremost international conference on interactive technology in healthcare. This event often features virtual worlds, avatars and virtual humans along with telemedecine, imaging, and immersive VR. DigitalSpace's. Galen Brandt featured a session on VR and healing/mental health featuring DigitalSpace's Traveler environment.
February 24-28 Was the Web3D/VRML 2002 Symposium (Broken Link) in Tempe Arizona where Michael Kaplan of Adobe and Bruce Damer of DigitalSpace presented a number of sessions on Adobe's Atmosphere platform.
March 1-3 Was CONTACT 2002, the 19th annual conference of CONTACT COTI (Cultures Of The Imagination), the grandfather organization of the Contact Consortium. This is a truly unique conference bringing together anthropologists, space scientists, science fiction writers and others at the Biltmore Hotel and Suites in Santa Clara. This year's dinner keynote speaker was Rusty Schweickart, Apollo astronaut and extraordinary fellow.
On March 2nd the Contact Consortium presented a special session on the Avatars2001 cyberconference, DigitalSpace's work with NASA Ames on the SimHab/Haughton Mars Project, the Biota.org AlivePrize initiative and the VLearn3D SIG, On Friday March 1st was a day at NASA Ames Research Center exploring the theme "The Search for Extraterrestrial Life -- Is the Cosmos Rife with Life?".
June 10 Was Quantum Viz 1 "Social Networks, Planetary Visualization & Dynamic InfoScapes - 2D, 3D, N-D" at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. See our photo album here. The Contact Consortium was a cooperating organization and presented a session on interacting in avatar cyberspace.
June 17-23 Was Laval Virtual in Laval Mayenne, France. Perhaps the largest conference in the VR and virtual worlds field in Europe, in its fourth year with a well stocked program and exhibition.

August 26-Sept 2 Was Burning Man 2002 at the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada. Never before was the virtual combined with the surreal physical on so vast a scale. See Bruce Damer's Burning Man 1999-2002 images and documentation.
October 18-20 Was POP ! TECH 2002 (aka Camden Technology Conference) on the theme of Artificial Worlds, in Camden, Maine. Bruce Damer presented a session on virtual worlds and the future of the commons. See the presentation slides here, and the photo album of the event here.

October 22 Bruce Damer and Galen Brandt presented sessions at the New York Studio program of the Parsons School and at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
November 2002 presentation to NASA Ames Research Center: A review of Virtual Worlds projects at NASA created by projects with RIACS, DigitalSpace and other partners.
December 9-13 Is Artificial Life VIII in Sydney Australia.
