Cyberspace meets Outerspace: Visiting Mars (Virtually)" and Avatars 2004
This year at CONTACT, the Contact Consortium and DigitalSpace hosted the Avatars cyber event Avatars2004.. AvaMars! in the new Adobe AtmosphereDetails of our participation and special session here, and see our gallery of images from the conference here
web-based virtual worlds platform. The Avatars conference is in its eighth year and the sixth held as an online virtual event. AvaMars will present 3D renditions of Mars Exploration Rover terrains, traverses and vehicles which have been produced with publicly available mission data.

Bruce Damer presented two sessions at the NASA Virtual Iron Bird conference . On the first day (March 31, 2004) the presentation was titled A review of Virtual Worlds projects at NASA Ames carried out by DigitalSpace, RIACS and other partners (find powerpoint version here). During this event, the Contact Consortium+DigitalSpace presented a special session on the Avatars2000 cyberconference, work with NASA Ames on the SimHab/Houghton Mars Project, the Moon project and the VLearn3D SIG, On Friday March 3rd was a day at NASA Ames Research Center exploring Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
March 20-24 Was the Computer Game Developer's Conference in San Jose California: what's new in online multiplayer gaming worlds.
April 12th was a special Brown Bag lunch at the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society (Cyberlaw) where Bruce Damer, Steven Reading, Galen Brandt, and Bob Gelman presented a session on for Lawrence Lessig's students and researchers. This presentation featured live journeys into online virtual worlds where ad hoc property and civil rules of conduct are emerging. From avatar citizens pilfering hairstyles and ending up in a moot court to communities and enterprises utilizing franchising and choardic structures, this fascinating corner of the net illustrates the concept that in Cyberspace, the code is the community.
Aug 10-17 Was SIGGRAPH 2001 in Los Angeles California featuring another Web3D Roundup featuring DigitalSpace and Adobe introducing the Atmosphere environment.
September Was the launch of the Atmospherians.com Atmosphere users community site, produced by DigitalSpace in cooperation with Adobe and the Atmosphere user community.
September 15-16th Was Cyberarts X, the Tenth Year Anniversary of Cyberarts International held in San Francisco at the Exploratorium and the Somarts Cultural Center. This year's theme was "rediscovering creativity". Cyberarts was presented in concert with YLEM (celebrating their 20th anniversary) and several other organizations supporting including Adobe, DigitalSpace and the Contact Consortium which presented a keynote and special "virtual CyberArts" and "YLEM/20 gallery" permitting in-world avatar attendance at this important event.

This is a truly unique conference bringing together anthropologists, space scientists, science fiction writers and others at the Biltmore Hotel and Suites in Santa Clara. This year's dinner keynote speaker will be Octavia E. Butler. During this event, DigitalSpace presented a special session on the Avatars99 cyberconference, the V-Learn initiative, and the Moon world reenactment of the Apollo XI landings.

May 17-19 Was the Delphi Group Conference on Corporate Portals in London U.K. Bruce Damer, President and CEO of DigitalSpace, together with Stuart Gold, Chief Architectural Officer and Galen Brandt, presented a special session "Back to the Future of the Corporate Portal" during the executive retreat on April 17th.
May 18-21 Was the Laval Virtual Conference in Laval, France, a major forum for the international scientific and professional exchanges regarding Virtual Reality. July 5-7 Is Virtual Worlds 2000 hosted by the International Institute of Mulimedia (Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci) in Paris, France. This is the second in a series and is focused on virtual worlds with a component of Artificial Life. There is both a scientific and art show component to the event.
Aug 8-13 Was SIGGRAPH 2000 in New Orleans LA.
Aug 23-26 Was Consciousness Reframed 2000 at the Centre for Advanecd Inquiry in the Interactive Arts (CAiiA), University of Wales College, Newport, Wales, UK, hosted by CAiiA-STAR*. Bruce Damer presented virtually from California with Conference chair Roy Ascott in Wales.
Sept 10-12 Was Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE) 2000 in San Francisco California where Bruce Damer, Stuart Gold and Galen Brandt presented a keynote address.
Sept 14-15 Was the Highlands Forum in Carmel California. Bruce Damer and Galen Brandt participated in a special event on the future of software with policy and planning specialists from the DOD/Pentagon. Organized by the Highlands Group. Note: this event was by invitation only.

October 13-14 Avatars2000 was a big success, read all about it! Avatars2000 and VLearn3D combined. Five years of previous conferences are covered here. These conferences were produced by DigitalSpace.

November 13-17 Bruce Damer and the DigitalSpace team presented at Fall COMDEX in Las Vegas with the DelphiGroup. A special session on making the Corporate Portal more human through Inhabitation featured live virtual worlds serving the B2B and B2C communities. June 7-9 Was the annual Institute for Robotics and Information Systems (IRIS) PRECARN IRIS 1999 Conference "From Virtual to Reality" in Toronto Ontaria Canada (the Regal Constellation Hotel) where Bruce Damer will give a dinner plenary and workshop on June 9th. Also on June 9th will be a Sector Focus Group (SFG) meeting on the topic of Virtual Reality. This event will occur in conjunction with the opening of The Virtual Environment TechnologiesCentre (VET) at London's (Ontario, Canada) Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI).

January 30-31 DigitalSpace, the Consortium and its special interest group Biota.org participated in World Movers, the VRML 2.0 Developers Conference in San Francisco CA. A Birds-of-a-Feather was also hosted by the Consortium on questions of Avatar Standards.
February 24-26 DigitalSpace and the Consortium SIG Biota.org presented itself as a VRML Consortium Working Group in formation at the VRML97 Symposium in Monterey CA. Avatar and VRML extensions were also discussed at VRML97.
March 1-5 DigitalSpace and the Consortium/Biota planning was held in Banff, Canada for the The Digital Burgess Workshop. Bruce Damer also presented a seminar at the University of Calgary and discussed the Nerve Garden project with Dr. Przemislaw Prusinkiewicz.

April 9 DigitalSpace and the Consortium presented a demonstration and discussion of virtual worlds at the Rank Xerox Research Center in Cambridge, UK.

June 2-4 DigitalSpace and the Consortium presented at the VRMLocity day at the 3D Design Conference in San Francisco, CA.
August 7 An Avatars Birds-of-a-Feature (BOF) was also held at the Omni Los Angeles hotel as a special event at SIGGRAPH 97. The eveing started with a VOCE by Phil Harrington. Presentations were given by by Tarik Thami of SFSU MSP (organizer), Bruce Damer (Contact Consortium), Steve DiPaola (on the experience of Onlive Traveler), Wendy Sue Noah (on WEAVE). Demonstrations were made by 3D Planet, and Deuxieme Monde a virtual world from France.

Aug 12-16 The University of Victoria Language Centre hosted the FLEAT III conference on Foreign Language Education and Technology. TheU Virtual University was demonstrated live as a learning environment. Students at the conference met inside TheU and engaged in collaborative building while international assistants helped in-avatar.
24-29 August Is HCI International '97, was the 7th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction presented jointly with 13th Symposium on Human Interface (Japan), San Francisco, California, USA.

Oct 31-Nov 5 The AACE presented WebNet 97--World Conference of the WWW, Internet, and Intranet where Bruce Damer of the Contact Consortium delivered the lunch keynote on Monday November 3rd, follwed by a book signing. Royal York Hotel, Toronto, Canada.
Nov 4-5 Bruce Damer presented a formal demonstration and all day course at Interface 97, Cambridge Marriott Hotel.
December 1 Virtual worlds were presented to the National Public Policy Institute and the Telecommunications Society, Pretoria South Africa. Topic use of the internet and virtual worlds for national reconciliation and reconstruction.
